Cover signal / professional practice

Louisiana rewrote parts of its architecture practice law.

Act 484 took effect August 1. The useful question for a firm is how its licensure, continuing education records, and seal workflow line up with the law and any board rules that follow.

The beat

Each weekly flyer gets the few items worth attention. A monthly issue gathers the signals, adds context, and links straight to public notices, records, and reporting. Open a headline for a short explanation; open its source for the full record.

This issue is a design and editorial prototype. Story 01 reports a sourced development. The Lessons Unlearned card is an editorial practice note. The other slots demonstrate the format without inventing opportunities or bid prices. The cover line changes every issue.

Act 484 updates architect and firm regulation

The act revises licensure definitions and procedures, firm requirements, renewals, and board authority. It authorizes the board to set continuing education requirements by rule (rather than 12 by law) and requires a board-authorized seal image (rather than, apparently, anything). The signed act is the controlling text; the legislative digest is a useful map of its changes (links below)

What it may mean: Possible distopic power shift to the board, though mostly reads as linguistic housekeeping ... A lot of Act 484 formalizes and clarifies authority the board was already exercising. The CE piece is a bit more substantive. The statute no longer locks in a number. So the board could propose changes through rulemaking. But that's a process, and nothing in the act itself changes the hours today. For the article, you could say the law moves the CE number out of statute and into board rule, while the current requirement stays at 12.

Action: nothing much required... they definitely haven't made you're life easier with a two year renewal cycle,  but not made it worse at a glance.

The door goes in first.1

A welded wraparound frame can be waiting for you before the wall exists.

Ask early
Which openings need welded, throated frames? Confirm wall build ups, throat dimensions, and hardware before release.
Caught late?
A knockdown wraparound frame can be installed after the wall; exposed assembly screws are the tradeoff.
Odd wall?
Consider a butt frame at thick or layered walls, masonry, or PEMB conditions. Detail the exposed returns and adjacent finish or break metal.
FIELD RULE: Coordinate frame type, actual wall thickness, anchorage, and installation sequence with the door supplier and contractor before approving the frame schedule.

The submittal will ask you to confirm every throat depth. That is the moment the “standard wall” develops three extra layers and a personality. A butt frame avoids wrapping an uncertain thickness, but its exposed edge and attachment need a deliberate detail. A knockdown frame may save the schedule at selected openings. Neither choice is a universal substitute for the specified frame.

1 “Door” is doing some work here. The leaf arrives later; the welded wraparound frame may need to be set before the wall is built. ↩
